How often do you exfoliate your face? Getting exfoliation right means smooth, radiant-looking skin. But exfoliate too much can cause red, irritated skin, while too little exfoliation can leave your skin looking dull. How do you strike the perfect balance? Don’t worry, we’ve got all the answers for you. Keep reading to learn how to properly exfoliate your skin!

Why Do I Need to Exfoliate?

While your skin naturally sheds dead cells every 30 days or so, sometimes it needs a little extra help to remove all of them. That’s where exfoliation comes in. Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin, revealing the smooth, glowing skin underneath.

Benefits of Face Exfoliation:

  • • Increases the effectiveness of topical skincare products by improving absorption
  • • Prevents clogged pores for fewer acne breakouts
  • • Boosts collagen production for smoother skin
  • • Reduces hyperpigmentation from freckles, age spots, and melasma
  • • Makes your skin look brighter and healthier

How to Properly Exfoliate in 4 Easy Steps

1. Select a Good Exfoliator

As far as good exfoliators go, there are many options. Some people prefer a chemical exfoliant that uses gentle acids to slough away dead skin cells. Other people prefer a physical exfoliant that uses small particles to buff away dead skin.

Our favorite exfoliator is Perfect Cleansing Scrub, which utilizes extra fine jojoba beads to exfoliate without drying out or irritating the skin. And since it’s so gentle, you can use it every day in place of a cleanser without the negative effects of a more abrasive exfoliant.

2. Scrub Away

To use Perfect Cleansing Scrub, massage into wet skin in a gentle, circular motion (being careful to avoid the eye area). Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

A lot of people wonder how long you should exfoliate. While the answer depends on the product, we recommend massaging Perfect Cleansing Scrub into your skin for about 30 seconds before rinsing.

3. Follow with Toner

Next, soak a cotton pad with Perfect Balancing Toner and swipe over skin. Toning is an important but often forgotten step in an effective skincare routine. Toner hydrates and balances the skin following cleansing or exfoliating, so don’t skip this step!

4. Finish with Moisturizer

Exfoliating leaves a new, fresh layer of skin exposed. So make sure that you keep that skin hydrated by applying a good moisturizer like Perfect Cream! Remember, since exfoliation improves absorption, you’ll get even more of the benefits from your favorite moisturizer or serum if you use it after exfoliating.
